Anadesa: Celebrations in Santiago Atitlán

The Fair of Santiago Atitlan in honor of Santiago Apostle

The fair in honor of Santiago Apostle, is a festivity celebrated by the whole town on July 25th of each year to honor the Apostle Santiago, the apostle who was in charge of the Franciscans who evangelized the area.

During this celebration there are many activities such as: the election of the indigenous queen called "King Tepepul’s Granddaughter". Allegorical parades take place in coordination with the educational centers. Students participate representing the traditions and cultures of the Mayan people. There are games of sport, the dance of the conquest and a procession with the image of the Apostle Santiago coordinated by the Brotherhoods of the town.  There is also the presence of mechanical games in the town during these15 days, concerts of different national groups and above all there is the presence of the roscas (donuts).

The roscas are a type of toasted bread that can be enjoyed with coffee, chocolate or a cold drink. The roscas are handmade and mostly come from the department of Quetzaltenango.

This type of bread is never missing in the fairs of Guatemala, so it will not be missing this July 25th!
