ANADESA: July’s fair!

Santiago Atitlán's Patron Saint's Fair

It's July, it's July!

On July 25th the patron saint fair of Atitlan is celebrated in honor of Santiago Apostle. It begins with the allegorical parade, organized by the municipality and all the schools (ANADESA students are rehearsing for their presentation) in which artistic activities, customs and the wearing of Mayan costumes are exhibited.

During 2 nights the election and coronation of Queen Riiy Ruman Tz'utujil Pop (Granddaughter of King Tepepul) and the Queen of the Lake, who will represent Santiago Atitlán in different parts of the country.

The 24th is a day full of harmony in which the dance of the conquest and the dance of the Mexicans takes place.

On the 25th, in the afternoon and evening, is the patronal fair where all the people in the family go to mass. Then come the fun with the different mechanical games located in the atrium of the Catholic church.

The closure of this fair is known as the eighth, 8 days after the patron saint fair, in which competitive activities take place. An example is an opportunity for men to climb a 10 meter pole covered with bait.

Another is the greased pig that takes place in the municipal central field, which consists of grabbing the pig, carrying it and going around the field three times to win the prize, that is, winning the pig!

Women also have a chance to participate in the competitions.

The cultures and traditions of Atitlán are a wealth!
