Ruk’ux Scholarship: Know some of our literacy activities!
Literacy activities
According to the story my relatives told about education and literacy in the past, most parents did not allow women to attend school, simply because they were WOMEN. It used to be said that women were the ones who did the housework, while men were sent to school.
There is also a smaller percentage of parents who wanted to let their children (both sexes) attend school. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so due to a shortage of family economic resources. This in turn resulted in the children helping out at home and work in order to have a stable economic income at home instead of going to school.
In the same way, there are men, women and young people who do not have a sufficient education and they are unable to read or write. The biggest disadvantage they encounter is that when they obtain work that requires reading, writing or mathematics, they are often disadvantaged and unable to perform..
Currently, the National Literacy Committee CONALFA, has been giving great support, and good opportunities to people who could not have access to education. This is a really important opportunity for our country, Guatemala and its municipalities.
CONALFA has been giving two-hour classes, five days a week in a four year course, for more than thirty years. This institution has graduates who are now professionals.
It also continues to facilitate education for men and women interested in learning to read, write, etc. with teachers who seek strategies to teach their classes in an active, meaningful and constructive way.
