Pueblo a Pueblo:  We're working hard to eradicate poverty!

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

"Eradicating poverty is not an act of charity, it is an act of justice." Nelson Mandela.

October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. In Guatemala 54.33% of the population is poor and 22.77% lives in extreme poverty (ENIGFAM 98 - 99).

One of our projects has the vision of contributing to minimize poverty. "We create opportunities for children to reach a healthy and productive adulthood; building local leadership capacities of children, youth and adults to promote sustainable change to future generations."

The youth leadership project supports young people to become entrepreneurs and generate their own economic income.  Currently, eight young people from the community of Santa Ana, San Lucas Tolimán, Sololá, have established their yarn-selling business, which began earlier this year. It is already generating income. Pueblo a Pueblo supports the young people with an economic incentive each quarter for their participation in the project, in order to support them in the time prior to the start of their enterprise.

At the same time, the Beekeeping Project provides its beneficiaries with the necessary tools to establish their own apiaries. The beekeepers' production is sold and they generate their own economic resources. Currently, ten young people from the community of Xejuyú, San Lucas Tolimán have established their own apiary and by the end of this year will have their first harvests and income.

Eight women from the community of Panabaj, Santiago Atitlán work in the community garden producing their own vegetables and saving economic resources by not having to go to the market to buy them, thus contributing to the household economy.

These projects with our beneficiaries not only contribute economically to their lives, they are also complemented by a process of non-formal educational training that allows them to be aware of their reality and thus be able to change it.
