Anadesa: Our rural life!
Indigenous & rural life in Santiago Atitlán
In August the “International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples" is celebrated. That is why we want to share with you the everyday life of the indidenous Tzutujiles of Santiago Atitlan, Solola.
Santiago Atitlan is a town consisting of 96.5% of the indigenous population who speak the Tzutujil language. A town where men and women are involved in handicrafts, fishing, agriculture and commerce as part of their economic opportunities..
However, in the rural areas men are seen daily in the streets carrying loads of firewood, boards, maxan leaves to wrap tamales, and other types of products that they glean from nature. Many times most of these men are accompanied by children who jointly earn their daily bread.
Women in rural areas are found in the streets going to or returning from the market where they sell or buy their daily food.Other women can be seen working with beads or weaving in the corridors of their homes. They are always accompanied by children. Each one leads the handicraft work day by day to support her husband with paying the family's expenses. In these areas you find families from 5 to 18 members. Some have the possibility of studying, but most lack this opportunity.
ANADESA is an organization that works specifically with the population of a rural area, ANADESA's mission is: To support the integral formation and sustainable community development of children, youth and women in rural communities, through education, training and economic development programs.
With your help we can carry out our mission:
