Yo’onik Learning Center: We care for the environment
Taking care of what we consume and the environment
The month of October is a special time to plant vegetables typical for this season. This includes cilantro, radishes and carrots, among others. Also the frequently used basic crops for consumption such as beans and squash.
Taking advantage of the season Yo'onik's children are being taught to grow vegetables, with the intention of encouraging them to consume only what the land produces. This is healthier and has more vitamins than junk products, canned goods, or packaged fried foods.
We make them aware that their food consumption can be healthier, and at the same time promote our culture and teachings of traditional farming. This is without pesticides and herbicides that contaminate the soil.
We also make them aware of reforestation, such as planting timber and fruit trees, so that when they become adults, they will help to continue transmitting the same teachings that we share with them today. They are taught how to take care of the environment, what foods are healthier to consume and they are encouraged to continue working the land with respect.
