Ruk’ux - Month of the homeland.

In the countries of Central America independence is celebrated in September. In Guatemala the commemoration of the independence of our country is celebrated on September 15.

For this important date, schools organize different activities such as civic altar contests, oratories, dances, poems, songs, gastronomy, band contests and more.

On September 13th there are parades by elementary school children and on the 14th schools, different organizations, churches, and different groups travel to different parts of Guatemala for the torch (symbolic flame). Then, on the day that is celebrated as our national holiday, the middle school youth hold a parade.

Ruk'ux gives importance to the independence of Guatemala and so organizes talks to share with the group. Chonita is one of the Ruk'ux students who participated in the parade and then traveled to Quetzaltenango for the torch along with another of our students, Lourdes. The other Ruk'ux students went to Retalhuleu and other places for the torch.

Thanks to the Ruk'ux activities we have learned to share among friends, work as a team, give opinions, speak in public, etc. It has made it easier for me to participate in different church activities and even in a political party.

I am gaining a lot of experience in life.
