Pueblo a Pueblo: Take a look at our garden.
Family Garden
The first progress that has been made is the awareness and sensitization of women in the protection of the environment focused on the care of plants and the conservation of native seeds.
This year at the Pueblo a Pueblo we started the Family Gardens project with women from Santiago Atitlán, in response to the need to consume healthy products, learn the organic planting process and save money by producing their own vegetables.
María Coquix Mendoza, 41 years old, comments that she has not had previous experience in planting and finds it very interesting how the soil, water and sun make the plants grow to provide food for humans.
Josefa Ajtujal Cali, 40 years old, says that she used to plant using chemicals and now she understands the importance of making her own organic fertilizer to nourish the soil and have healthy crops that benefit the soil and contribute to the nutrition of the people.
This project also helps the women's mental health, as they say that in the garden they feel relaxed and in contact with nature while sharing and learning with other women.
The participation of the women is very active as in the case of Josefa and Maria, organizing themselves to carry out the different tasks in the garden, giving their opinion, solving questions, and to to learn.
That is the first phase of a demonstrative organic garden, where they learn to produce and harvest from their own family garden.
This is how we emphasize and strengthen the rights of women, providing them with opportunities to participate in spaces that contribute to their integral development.
