Ruk’ux Scholarship: The beginning of our journey!

How the scholarship program began and why it’s so important to Santiago Atitlán

It is a pleasure to share the news that from now on we will be in a fundraising campaign with the objective of purchasing and providing a school backpack to our beneficiaries. You can find our first funding petition here.

Ruk'ux was started in 2007, it began with the love of a mother wanting to improve her son’s life.  She searched for donors and opportunities that would allow her son to continue studying and achieve a better future. 

This was where her idea originated to look for support for young people interested in continuing their studies and who, due to the economic limitations of their parents, had not been able to do so, became reality. Then more young people with excellent academic performance, with good recommendations from their teachers and who were interested in getting scholarships to achieve their dreams of becoming professionals were sought.

Within a large group of young people, many difficulties were identified in their learning process.  One of the problems was the deficiency and difficulties in communication. The need to implement study hours, service hours and reading circles was detected. 

Using the previous strategy, the following was achieved: losing their fears, adapting the habit of reading, improving comprehension and socializing through the service hours. Also a specific day for study hours was established in which everyone did their school work.

Within all this process and the progress that was obtained, new activities and projects of great benefit were implemented. They include; reading with the children from a local school, language immersion programs, internal reading circles, expanding community support and entrepreneurship activities.
