Pueblo a Pueblo (PaP): Meet Candelaria!

We are happy to announce our new online fundraising relationship with DonorSee.  You can find our first funding petition here.

In the video on DonorSee, Candelaria talks about the importance of being able to learn how to create an organic food garden for her family.

Candelaria is excited to be a participant in our new prototype garden project. She offered to make the request for herself and on behalf of herself and others since she understands the importance of being able to harvest healthy food for her family.

This pilot project will include learning the basics of  organic food gardening, from soil cultivation through harvest. It will also be a space where women will learn about nutrition and food preparation in ways that can be easily practiced in their homes and communities.

Guatemala is still greatly affected by the economic consequences of the pandemic and food costs are constantly increasing. This is especially true for the residents in rural areas, such as Santiago Atitlán, where options for paid work are limited.

Women play an essential role in the family and silently suffer from economic challenges. In Guatemala, 38% of women are indigenous, 51% live in rural areas, and 31% are heads of household.

Rural women keep ancestral knowledge and the preservation of traditional culture and customs that are often the basis of livelihoods in their communities. However, they are generally excluded from contributing to the family income, especially in agricultural matters.

The main objective of this pilot project is to empower women with knowledge about organic agriculture and nutrition to improve family food security. Each woman will be supported by the program to implement a family garden after participating in the demonstration garden project with 9 other women.

The progress and results of this initiative will be monitored, evaluated, and adjusted for future implementation since Pueblo a Pueblo’s goal is to multiply the number of women who have access to this program.
