Traveling Library: We love reading!
Mrs. Isa
Mrs. Isa has taught the pre-primary grade for 6 years at the Open Door. She also shares stories in different schools in Santiago Atitlan. These days I have been searching for inclusion books. Among them she found the book "Daniela La Pirata", Daniela the Pirate, which is one of the selection books we have in our basket.
The book talks about Daniela who dreams of becoming one of the sailors on the dreaded pirate ship Black Cayman. To do so, she must face all the tests proposed by the captain of the ship, and she passes them all brilliantly. But it seems that, because she is a girl, she is not allowed to be a pirate. In the end Daniela manages to become captain of the ship with the support of the other members of the crew.
Mrs. Isa says about the book: "I really loved the book, for me it is very special because I identified it with my own life. I like to wear dark-colored clothes but I was told that this could not be possible because I was a girl. But over the years I managed to overcome those stereotypes. I also remember that there were also things that some people wouldn't let me do because I was a woman, but I worked hard to overcome them brilliantly as well."
After telling the story to the children of the community, Mrs. Isa made a comparative chart about the stereotypes that exist in the community of Santiago Atitlán. The children commented with their ideas about what they thought and about how their community thinks. They sought to find positive ideas to cultivate inclusion in the community.
Thanks to you, some of the children of Santiago Atitlán enjoy books and reflect on inclusion to break stereotypes. In the library Puerta Abierta we continue our search for more books to continue sharing with more children in the community. With your support we will be able to reach more children.
Thank you very much - Miltiox
